Old-school roof decking and metal roof // E141
Framing is done on our off-grid office in the woods - it's time to add the roof. No OSB. This is an alternative to using OSB on your roof. Jon installs the roof deck with 1x6 sawmilled pine boards. He then adds felt paper roof underlayment, installs the air gap and finally installs the metal roof panels on a 9/12 pitch gable roof. Following the completion of the roof install, Jon struggles to hoist a long poplar tree out of the woods to bring down to the sawmill to begin milling the boards needed for the siding and exterior finishings on his office in the woods.

Next step to making our off-grid office is framing. In this episode, Jon and Meg frame the structure and add exterior diagonal board sheathing with their own sawmilled lumber.
Diagonal board cedar subfloor in our off-grid office // E139

Cedar floor joists and cedar subfloor are anchored atop the root cellar walls to create the base for our off-grid office. We also install our IBC tote water tanks before the joists are installed so we can have an abundance of potable water on demand. Jon preps the off-grid office root cellar so he can begin framing. In this episode, the natural stone steps are installed, providing access to the root cellar. The sewar main is laid to the septic tank. The lintel is treated with borax as a wood preservative and set across the block wall. Finally, the sill plates are installed, officially making the block wall ready for rim joists and the build...
Junk cedar trees to usable lumber // E137
Просмотров 12 тыс.6 месяцев назад
After the forestry mulcher work, Jon harvests all the Eastern Red Cedar trees he can to sawmill them into rough sawn lumber for the off-grid office's floor joists and subfloor. Jon also contemplates digging a pond on the property in an area that has a natural clay bottom and would be fed by a seasonal creek - for trout, bluegill, bass and other native, edible fish. Episode 137: 0:00 - Pond thou...

A D1 dozer shows up on the top of my mountain with a huge forestry mulcher to clear trees and brush for an amazing mountain top view. Single well, two locations (high elevation gain) // E134
Просмотров 13 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Getting water to our house site involves our deep well pump to push water over 200 feet in elevation over 1,800 feet long. At this elevation, our pressure tank would not be able to push the water because the pressure would not be high enough coming out of the tank. My solution is to bypass the pressure tank and deliver water straight from the well's pump using pure horsepower. The other obstacl...
Water / Effluents / Fiber - Single trench // E133
Просмотров 20 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Our 1,800-foot trench to our off-grid house is getting lines for water, effluents, and fiber. This is allowed with water and effluents separation of at least 12 inches. We sleeve the lines that cross the road with 4-inch sewage pipe to reinforce the lines and protect them from the weight of vehicles and equipment on the road above. Check valves are installed on the water line and a review of th...

Root cellar footers - building off grid // E131
Просмотров 27 тыс.11 месяцев назад
We are in the process of building an office and decided a root cellar beneath it would be an invaluable addition to our homestead. Our house site is off grid and will include a solar powered electric system, which the office structure will house for us. Just a note about your rope clips... your comment at 6:55 saying "this one is done incorrectly" is wrong. The saddle of a wire rope clip goes on the live end, not the dead end. The example shown at 6:55 is done right.

Off-topic Question: How do you guys store your wire rope? Looking for a manual winder/reel but everything is either plastic or crazy expensive. THANK YOU!!!'

    • @WalnutsandWineberries

I repurposed an old hose reel, but it's not the best solution because the aircraft cable is too heavy for it. It constantly wants to unwind. The shorter ropes, I coil them by hand and keep them in a tote with the snatch blocks.

Under the bed, put a bedding skirt or use a plastic tablecloth as a skirt. Air will flow, but it will give you a dressed look. Hang your veges in a wire basket; use vertical space. Also, store stuff in the microwave. Get a pizza stone for your oven's size. It's a game-changer! Make sure to have a gas alert for propane gas poisoning leaks. A cutting board or a roll-over wire sink topper will give you more countertops.

Never climb on the stump like you did at 1250. Much of the time the root ball will decide to right itself and if it hits you, you will know what a baseball feels like. Assuming it doesn't kill you.
